Why he was so<br /> angry was lost on me, he<br /> had never been this furious.<br /> <br /> <br /> No one uttered a word and<br /> I stood there not knowing<br /> what exactly was amiss.<br /> “I asked you a question.<br /> What the hell are you doing<br /> here?” Richard growled<br /> with his fists clenched.<br /> <br /> <br /> I grabbed his hand to calm<br /> him down a bit. “Calm<br /> down honey and show the<br /> woman some respect<br /> please. Who is she?” I asked<br /> quietly but he did not<br /> answer. He did not have to<br /> anyways. He was only this<br /> angry whenever he talked<br /> about one person. I looked<br /> the woman and got my<br /> confirmation – the blue<br /> eyes could not be mistaken.<br /> Those piercing blue eyes<br /> which could do a lot of<br /> things by just staring were<br /> exactly the same as<br /> Richard’s. I looked from<br /> Richard to the woman and<br /> back noticing the striking<br /> resemblance.<br /> <br /> <br /> “Richy, is this your<br /> mother?” I asked quietly.<br /> Richard’s hand immediately<br /> left mine as he turned his<br /> glare towards me. “She is<br /> not MY mother” he said<br /> stressing the ‘my’.<br /> I got my confirmation in<br /> that statement.<br /> <br /> <br /> The subject<br /> matter just stood there<br /> speechless and could have<br /> been mistaken for a deaf<br /> and dumb.<br /> Richard looked at his father<br /> knowing that this was his<br /> doing. “I don’t know what<br /> she is doing here and I<br /> don’t want to know but one<br /> thing I know is that I don’t<br /> wanna see her here when I<br /> get back”, he said and<br /> stormed out of the sitting<br /> room towards the masters’<br /> bedroom.<br /> The entire room was as<br /> though no one was inside<br /> as no one made a single<br /> sound. I don’t know why I<br /> did not stop Richard from<br /> leaving the room but I<br /> guess my professional<br /> instinct made me realize<br /> that he needed a little time<br /> to himself. I felt his pain and<br /> knew just what he must be<br /> feeling as I had felt that way<br /> too. I raised my eyes to<br /> stare at my newly found<br /> mother-in-law but she<br /> seemed to be in tears.<br /> Her voice shattered the silence in the room.<br /> <br /> <br /> “I told<br /> you James. He would never<br /> forgive me and he has a<br /> right not to. It was weeks after I found out <br><br>that <br> Mr Jegas was my real <br><br>father. <br><br><br><br>Mr. Badmus, my step- <br><br>father had introduced him to me <br><br>as Inspector Sule. He was <br><br>the one who investigated <br><br>Tunji's murder case and <br><br>detained Mr Badmus as a <br><br>suspect. They had become friends after the incident <br><br>and luckily for everyone, <br><br>Mr. <br><br>Badmus had invited him <br><br>for <br><br>the naming ceremony. <br><br>How <br> Oyinade had passed the <br> security men we had <br><br>around to guard the place <br><br>was still a mystery. <br><br><br><br>Inspector Sule apparently goes everywhere with a <br><br>gun and I thanked God and <br> am still thanking God for <br> that attribute. I ran <br><br>towards <br> my mother-in-law and took <br><br>my baby with tears in my <br><br>eyes. Richard came and <br><br>held <br><br>me tenderly, whispering <br><br>comforting words. After some minutes, he went to <br><br>hold his mum who was <br><br>trying to be brave but was <br><br>still physically shaken. <br><br>Everyone started <br><br>murmuring at the same time and we watched as <br><br>Inspector Sule and some of <br><br>the police officers dragged <br><br>a hurt Oyinade out of the <br><br>premises. <br><br>"D--n you all, d--n you" she yelled with very little <br><br>strength as she was being <br><br>dragged out. <br><br>Everyone started thanking <br><br>God, all at once and I <br><br>decided I had had enough for one day. That such a <br><br>wonderful day hadn't <br><br>been <br><br>turned to a day of <br><br>mourning is something I <br><br>would forever be grateful to <br><br>God for. I swallowed as <br><br>Richard kissed my head, <br><br>kissed little Roland <br><br>affectionately and led us <br><br>inside. Family members came inside some minutes <br><br>later to help us drive <br><br>away <br><br>the thought of what just <br><br>happened. Trust Prisca in <br><br>such a situation, she made a joke that had everyone <br><br>laughing. Before we knew <br><br>it, the incident was almost <br><br>forgotten. Roland woke up <br><br>and demanded his food <br><br>and I excused myself and made for the bedroom. <br><br>After b----t-feeding him, I <br><br>placed him on the bed, <br><br>staring at him for <br><br>sometime. I felt happy that she would not <br><br>be bothering us anymore. <br><br>"Sweetheart" Richard <br><br>called <br><br>as he entered the room. I <br><br>looked up with a smile as I <br><br>tried to zip the gown I had <br><br>changed into. "Let me help <br><br>you with that" he <br><br>whispered, coming over to <br><br>my back to pull the zip. "I was scared, so scared" I <br><br>whispered. He turned me <br><br>around and I faced him. "I <br><br>was much more scared. <br><br>Come here" he held me <br><br>against him affectionately in <br><br>a tight hug like he was <br><br>trying to glue us together. <br><br>"It is all over now" <br><br>***** <br><br>'On our wedding day, I never thought we would <br><br>experience any itch in our <br><br>marriage. It was so <br><br>perfect <br><br>that I felt it would always <br><br>be like that. But every <br><br>marriage <br><br>has its own tests, ours is <br><br>the issue of children, <br><br>others <br><br>can be financial problems or even trust. The most <br><br>important thing is sticking <br><br>with God through it all. <br><br>The <br><br>devil would always try to <br><br>scatter a union and he would not come <br><br>personally <br><br>but would use agents. Just <br><br>like I love my Richard, <br><br>love <br><br>your husband dearly, even more. It is not enough to <br><br>love, tell them regularly, <br><br>show it in your actions. <br><br>Let <br><br>the love in your house <br><br>grow instead of diminish. <br><br>Whenever something goes <br><br>wrong, discuss it and trash <br><br>it out immediately. Don't <br><br>keep ANYTHING from your <br><br>spouse. To all the singles who are in love with <br><br>someone but their love is <br><br>not reciprocated, it <br><br>happens. Don't try to force <br><br>your love on them. Love <br><br>cannot be forced. It comes on its own. I was as gentle as a <br><br>dove" he said defensively. <br><br>"Dove? I barely had two <br><br>hours of sleep when I was <br><br>nursing you" we heard Richard's mum say, <br><br>approaching us. She had <br><br>been in our house for <br><br>about a week now, since <br><br>the naming. My mum is <br><br>still around and has been <br><br>around before I delivered, <br><br>to monitor me, being my <br><br>first child. I was very <br><br>grateful to have both <br><br>women around. He ranted the <br>lie he had told his wife <br>months ago; that Ronke was the one he had given <br>a <br>lift in his car who stole his <br>briefcase. Ronke yelled, <br>stating the fact that <br>everything he said was a lie. <br>She narrated everything <br>that had happened even <br>though the chief tried to <br>cut <br>her shut every now and then. The wrath of his <br>wife <br>turned to him <br>immediately, <br>and for a while, she and <br>the pastor could as well be <br>invisible because they just <br>sat there looking. The <br>pastor settled the raging <br>war between them in <br>order to face the reason why <br>they <br>came. <br>Ronke knelt down and <br>pleaded. She presented <br>the remaining money. After <br>explaining all the events <br>in <br>her life right from the <br>time <br>she was born; how that she <br>never knew her parents <br>and that she was picked <br>up <br>from the dustbin by a <br>good woman who later died <br>when she was ten, <br>everyone became soft- <br>hearted. She explained <br>that <br>she had since then learnt to <br>survive on her own, <br>depending on men for her <br>food, hereby becoming a <br>harlot since she had no <br>certificate to tender anywhere apart from her <br>school cert. The pastor <br>intervened and explained <br>how she had become born <br>again and had since then <br>stopped spending the stolen money. The crafts and art works were inspected by <br>everyone that came. The <br>flowers gave the <br>environment a sweet <br>smell <br>and those who were not flower freaks started <br>developing interest in <br>them. <br><br><br>My native attire dazzled <br>and <br>accentuated my body as I went from one place to <br>another greeting people. <br>It <br>is certain that I would not <br>be able to greet half of the <br>guests but I still went about <br>welcoming people. My <br>mum <br>was taking care of the <br>baby <br>and Richard has been held down by a group of <br>friends. <br>I saw some of those <br>friends <br>coming with Richard and I <br>smiled. Richard and I had the same costume on and <br>my heart swelled with <br>pride <br>as I gazed at my <br>handsome <br>husband. She was only <br>able to secure a one room <br>apartment in order to buy <br>some foodstuff and <br>clothes cos she had only left her <br>house with the cloth she <br>had on. <br>Hunger raked her tummy <br>and she grimaced. All she <br>had left from the bag of rice <br>she bought months ago <br>would not last her a week. <br>All her foodstuff was on <br>the <br>edge. Getting a job had proved to be a futile effort <br>because she had to lie low <br>for fear of being arrested. <br>All these happened <br>because <br>of Belina. That little witch. Oyinade hissed, combing <br>her hair with her fingers. <br>She had watched Belina <br>on <br>television barely a month <br>ago attending a red carpet even with Richard, Tony <br>and Prisca. She almost <br>used <br>her eyes to abort the <br>pregnancy through the <br>screen. She made a pledge to have her revenge. She <br>definitely would do that, <br>even if it happened to be <br>the last thing she did, she <br>vowed. <br>Tears rolled out of my eyes, <br>going in the direction of <br>my <br>ears. I lay on the hospital <br>bed, in labour. The pain was so <br>unbearable that I started doubting my ability to go <br>through it all. I held on to <br>God, the only one that <br>could <br>help me through it all. I <br>envisioned God standing there with me and I got a <br>renewed strength. The <br>echo <br>of 'push' rang in my head <br>and I gave it all I could. I <br>could only feel pain coercing through me like a <br>thousand knives. <br>The cry of a baby pierced <br>the room and swallowed. <br>A <br>weak smile was displayed on my face as I weakly <br>took <br>the baby from the doctor. I <br>laughed weakly in tears <br>as I <br>stared at the tiny creature I <br>was holding. The love I <br>felt <br>there and then is one <br>which <br>I have never experienced before. Even though I felt <br>weak and semi- <br>conscious,I <br>knew that I would not <br>leave <br>my baby for anything in the <br>world. I have taken your daughter as<br> mine already. "He <br>became so violent that we had to sedate him. They all looked beautiful as usual, <br>in beautiful clothes and nice braids. <br><br>I looked around, admiring all the beautiful <br>clothes surrounding me. <br>"Sweetheart" I was <br>jerked from my window- <br>shopping when I heard Prisca's voice. <br><br><br>"You make me feel as <br>though you wanna buy <br>everything here". She <br>said, coming over with a smile. <br><br><br>She faced one of her <br>workers and gasped. "Did <br>she drop a mouth- <br>watering <br>cheque?" <br>Everyone laughed hard, <br>including me. I walked up to her and gave her a cool <br>hug. <br>Prisca and I proceeded <br>into <br>her office where I was <br>served a very cool drink. I looked round at the <br>beauty <br>of the office. A newspaper resting on her laps, making her look like a female<br> military administrator. She smiled as soon as she noticed our presence and nodded to<br> Ona.<br><br></p> <p dir="ltr">“thanks for bringing her, you can now leave<br> us” she said calmly to Ona, who quickly<br> obeyed and left the room.<br> “come sit here my dear” she said to me, pointing to a small chair facing her bed. I will very much love to adopt her.<br> She’s very cute and i promise she will have the best life can offer. She had <br>expected it. <br><br>She went ahead to explain everything she had planned on saying, <br>enjoying the excited squeals she was receiving. <br>********** <br>********** <br>I knelt down beside my <br>bed, talking to my Father. <br>The discussions I always have with my father in <br>prayer are always as if I am talking to a <br>physical being. It helps me to see God, not just as my God and <br>creator, but also as my father. I noticed the <br>difference it makes: when you pray the normal <br>routine-like prayer, you <br>tend to forget that God is actually your father and <br>you pray amiss. The true <br>meaning and relevance of <br>'The Lord's prayer' which <br>starts with 'Our Father who art in Heaven' had become more real to me <br>when I decided to turn every prayer into a conversation <br>with God. It gives you the feel that God is listening to what you are <br>saying as a father listens to his child and it makes prayer more <br>exciting and appealing. <br><br><br>After about thirty minutes, I stood up. Richard had already gone to <br>the hospital. We already had our family prayer before he left but <br>since I have been <br>signed to stay put at <br>home, I decided a lengthy prayer would be wonderful. I have not <br>stopped thanking God <br>for the miracle happening <br>in my tommy and I would <br>continue to thank Him for <br>as long as I have the <br>strength to. I showered and combed my <br>hair tenderly after <br>massaging enough oil and cream into it. I was fully dressed and was <br>standing right in front of the mirror, <br>checking myself out and <br>combing my hair to <br>perfection. I still could not <br>figure out why I had to <br>stay at home. I miss my office terribly. I am not yet heavy <br>for crying out loud. <br>Yesternight had been so <br>wonderful, simply mind- blowing. I had even <br>forgotten to ask about the hospital, about Kelvin, his assistant – the <br>little w---e and many others. I was <br>just contented having my love with me. The hospital has <br>not been discussed at all <br>since last week, it was as <br>if he was avoiding the subject, like something <br>would upsetting him if he <br>as much as talked about it. <br><br><br>I wanted to bridge the topic yesterday but something stopped me – it was the <br>desire to have my <br>husband <br>to myself without any <br>work <br>related talk. My phone beeped and I <br>smiled when I stared at <br>the screen. <br><br><br>"Hey Pric…" I laughed at <br>the long sermon Prisca was ranting due to my not calling her for three days. <br><br>"I am sorry ma… No, don't. I <br>am coming over… Cmon <br>now, what is wrong with <br>everyone these days? I am pregnant not crippled… my being pregnant does not <br>stop me from moving <br>now… stay right there, I <br>am coming over and that is that." I dropped the phone. <br>Now, everyone wants to <br>take Richard's stance? I <br>would not allow that. I <br>laughed as I remembered <br>the words Prisca had said, trying to convince me to <br>stay at home. The baby is <br>in <br>my tummy for God's sake, <br>not on my legs.
